Hi! I am Hazel, an avid foodie with a voracious appetite and a finicky baker. I would not claim that baking brings me peace or it is my de-stress mechanism but I would rather say it is my first love and will forever be.
I always believe we have got only one life to live and you are not promised a tomorrow, so might as well make the most of it. During one of the many late night conversations with my best friend (and now my husband) we started mulling over this thought, and he asked me what would you do if you had only one life and a few days left in it ? I said I would bake and share it as that would mean people would remember me for a long time with a smile everytime they think of me via that baked goody. That’s how I came up with “One Life to Bake”.
I am a software engineer by profession and before you start to think anything else I would like to say no this is not a side project to escape from a bored corporate desk job. I do love my job very much and it is my brain food. My love for baking started when I was 7 and would keep pestering my mom to bake for me and teach me how to bake. The story goes something like this – The doorbell rings and a feisty 7 year old me gets the door and she sees a salesman, he says he is here to sell a portable tabletop oven from the brand called Singer. Those days Singer used to be reliable brand and very big in India. They sold everything from sewing machine to oven and were considered a desirable and reputed appliance to have in their house. But little did the 7 year old me know all this about Singer and an oven. The salesman started explaining its working to my Mom; both me and Mom were spellbound and quite impressed by the product at the end of the demo, the salesman gave his business card and asked mother and me to think about his product and left the house. I was so vowed by the concept of an oven and that it could make those fluffy and stunning cakes I admire in the window of my local bakery. I used to watch the salesman everyday visit her locality in a big van with Singer brand drawn on it, every time I saw him from my balcony I made it a point to remind mom that she needs to call him about the oven. I grew more and more restless everyday and decided to question Mom everyday and wanted to know whether or not she had called the salesman about her decision. In the age when kids throw a fit about cars, dolls and clothes (perhaps mobile, tablets for today’s generation) this little Me was throwing a tantrum about how her mom doesn’t love her enough as she simply wouldn’t buy an oven and bake a cake for her. One fine day my mom gave in and decided to borrow a friend’s electric oven and take me with her. That day was the best day of my childhood which I fondly remember, we baked a vanilla tutti fruity cake (candied fruit cake). I was mesmerised by how eggs, flour and butter could produce something so fluffy and addictive. I couldn’t stop thinking about the cake and talking about how my mum made this magical cake. I must have bored all my friends for the entire week with my cake high.
This blog is a result of my passion for baking and sleepless nights of thinking about baking. You can find sweet and savoury and all kinds of recipes here as I go on this baking journey of my own. Thank you for stopping by and hopefully you will enjoy as well as utilise these recipes from time to time.
